The combined company plans to provide direct-to-device connectivity to phones, devices, and machines using multiple frequency bands. Elveo says it has commercial agreements with more than 50 mobile network operators and distribution partners operating in more than 60 countries. The merger brings together Lynk's LEO satellite platform and Omnispace's licensed spectrum portfolio. Data Center Dynamics reports that Lynk currently operates five small satellites and that Omnispace contributes 60MHz of globally coordinated S-band spectrum. SES has expanded its strategic investment in Elveo and will provide access to its global space and ground infrastructure while supporting engineering, operations, regulatory work and market development. SES says the collaboration will combine Elveo's LEO network with its own GEO and MEO systems. The assessment The merger puts Lynk’s satellite operations and Omnispace’s spectrum position under one company. Lynk already has satellites in orbit and experience connecting them directly to standard mobile phones. Omnispace brings coordinated S-band spectrum that can support satellite services, subject to national authorisations. Elveo can now plan how those satellites and frequencies are used together, rather than coordinating them across two separate companies. SES remains an infrastructure partner, providing access to space and ground systems where agreed. That combination still has to become a working commercial network. Elveo needs to integrate the two companies’ technologies, deploy additional satellites, secure spectrum approvals in individual markets and connect its service with participating mobile operators. These steps determine where the service can actually launch and what it can support; the merger itself does not resolve them. For BTW readers, the important change is that Elveo now controls more of the satellite and spectrum assets needed for direct-to-device deployment. The evidence of progress will be commercial operator launches using the combined platform, not the size of the merged asset portfolio. What to watch Watch for Elveo to publish a combined constellation plan and confirm which spectrum bands will support its first commercial services. Satellite orders or launch contracts, national spectrum approvals and MNO service launches will show where deployment is moving beyond integration work. Use of SES ground or space infrastructure in live Elveo services would also show how the partnership fits into the operating network.
