What happened

Immunefi, a top-tier bug bounty platform in the blockchain sector, collaborates with the Ethereum Foundation to stage the “Attackathon”, a monumental security audit. Attackathon marks an unprecedented alliance, geared towards executing what is anticipated to be the most extensive crowdsourced security review competition ever organised. This initiative is laser-focused on enhancing the security profile of the entire protocol codebase. Underpinned by Immunefi, the Attackathon will orchestrate a deadline-driven code examination, magnetising the involvement of premier cybersecurity experts. Complementing this core activity is an all-encompassing educational outreach designed to uplift the Ethereum community’s understanding and proficiency in matters of security and technological nuances pertinent to the Ethereum ecosystem

Ethereum, pioneering decentralisation and smart contracts since 2015, drives innovation in various fields. The Ethereum Foundation, a collective dedicated to the protocol’s advancement and ecosystem growth, is instrumental in its secure development.

Immunefi, celebrated for safeguarding billions in user funds across blockchain ventures and distributing notable bug bounty rewards, brings expertise to the Attackathon. This event mobilises a cadre of skilled individuals to scrutinise the blockchain for vulnerabilities, ensuring Ethereum’s protection against threats.

Why it’s important

Considering the $400 million in losses due to blockchain exploits in 2024’s first half, as per SlowMist, the Attackathon is a proactive move to strengthen Ethereum’s resilience. Maintaining its rank as the second-largest blockchain by market cap, trailing Bitcoin, relies on its security.

To entice participation and reinforce protocol safety, Immunefi and the Ethereum Foundation invite community contributions to a reward pool. Initially funded with $500,000, additional donations are accepted until 1 August, with Attackathon specifics revealed thereafter.

“Ethereum is fundamentally transforming the world as we know it and will continue to do so,” said Mitchell Amador, founder and chief executive of Immunefi. “By leveraging our collective security expertise and resources, we aim to ensure the integrity and security of the Ethereum network.”

This collaboration underscores both organisations’ dedication to cultivating a secure blockchain ecosystem. Leveraging the security community’s collective knowledge, they strive to uphold Ethereum’s integrity and solidify its foundational role in the digital economy.
