Summary
- UN General Assembly resolution 80/173 made the IGF a permanent forum and invited a funding proposal that combines core UN funding with voluntary contributions.
- The NRO says UN DESA accepted its US$100,000 contribution on 28 August 2026. The announcement does not say how long it lasts or whether it will recur.
The Forum has a permanent mandate. Its latest headline contribution has no published timetable beyond the date it was accepted.
The Number Resource Organization announced on 22 September that it had increased its financial contribution to the Internet Governance Forum to US$100,000. The NRO says the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs accepted it on 28 August. The release says the money will support the IGF and its Secretariat. It does not give a coverage period, installment plan, renewal date or recurring commitment.
That missing line matters because the United Nations has already changed the Forum’s status. Resolution A/RES/80/173, adopted on 17 December 2025, makes the IGF a permanent UN forum and calls for a strengthened Secretariat with appropriate staffing and resources. It also invites the Secretary-General, with support from UN DESA, to submit a proposal for sustainable funding that combines core UN funding and voluntary contributions.
The funding page describes the current arrangement plainly: the IGF Secretariat is funded by voluntary contributions outside the UN Secretariat’s regular budget. Donors can support the annual meeting, intersessional work and capacity development through the Trust Fund. Host countries carry most costs of the annual meeting, so the Forum’s operating support and the conference bill are related but different accounts.
The NRO contribution is real support, formally accepted by the UN. The public announcement does not show whether it buys one year of Secretariat work, supports a particular activity, or sits inside a longer commitment. It also does not state the Forum’s full funding need or any remaining gap. Two figures would make the contribution measurable: its term and the IGF’s full funding need. Publish both and the coverage can be calculated.
Permanence answers how long the institution is meant to exist. It does not, by itself, answer how staff and intersessional work will be paid for from year to year. The test is now a published funding proposal, with the source, period and renewal terms of voluntary support set beside any core-budget contribution.
