Summary
- The IESG approved DAWN's charter on 22 October; the IETF now lists the AI-resource discovery working group as active.
- Its first job is a narrow address book: define how to find minimum public information, with a protocol submission due in December 2027.
The approval record supplies the moment the paperwork became power. On 22 October the IESG closed its approval ballot, moved the charter to Approved, and posted the approved text. DAWN's group page now says Active. A draft mandate has finally acquired a working group and a clock.
The name sounds like an alarm clock for the entire AI industry. The charter is more specific. DAWN will define initial discovery of public information about AI resources: examples include type, reachability, communication protocol and services. It covers a local network, an organization, and cooperating parties with trust relationships over the public Internet. The group may consider DNS and mDNS; the approved text picks no winner yet.
The scope line is the interesting piece of carpentry. Discovering where a catalog lives fits. Opening its drawers to exchange broader capabilities does not. Internet-wide indexing, ranking and selection, identity management, and communication after discovery sit outside this first assignment. The IETF has given DAWN the doorbell, not the dating app.
There is also a delivery schedule. Optional terminology and use-cases documents target June 2027. The Standards Track protocol specification or specifications, which must define the minimum public information, target IESG submission in December 2027; informational architecture documents follow in January 2028. A chartered group now has room to argue over a mechanism, with dates against which its work can be read.
