What happened: Feedback period for ICP-2 principles ends
The feedback period for the proposed ICP-2 principles officially concluded on January 20, 2025, marking the end of a nearly three-month consultation process. From October 8 to December 6, 2024, stakeholders from various Internet communities engaged with the questionnaire, offering their opinions on the proposed updates to the ICP-2 principles. These responses came from the users and participants associated with each Regional Internet Registry (RIR), which play a crucial role in the governance of the global Internet infrastructure. A total of nearly 300 responses were received across the regions, with participants providing feedback on each principle, rating their importance, and sharing additional comments for further consideration.
The consultation has concluded. Next, the team behind the process will conduct a qualitative analysis of the feedback. They will focus on understanding the concerns, suggestions, and impressions from participants. Subsequently, the findings will be shared with the broader Internet community to ensure transparency in decision-making. This process is crucial for refining the ICP-2 principles, which define the criteria for recognizing and evaluating RIRs. By doing so, the principles can better reflect the evolving needs of the global Internet community.
Why it’s important
The conclusion of the ICP-2 feedback period marks a key step in improving the governance of Regional Internet Registries. The ICP-2 principles are crucial for Internet infrastructure. They help ensure that RIRs operate in an accountable and transparent manner. The feedback received will help ensure these principles reflect the evolving needs of the global Internet community.
The ICP-2 principles guide RIR operations and establish the criteria for their recognition. Regular updates are needed to keep pace with changes in technology, policy, and community expectations. Gathering input from stakeholders worldwide makes the consultation process comprehensive and inclusive. Analyzing the feedback will identify areas for improvement and reinforce the need for transparency and accountability in Internet governance.
