Summary

  • ARIN’s 2 November delegated file adds AS403163; its RDAP record names CMU-MIAMI and Carnegie Mellon University.
  • Carnegie Mellon plans Miami construction in 2027 and graduate enrollment in 2028. A RIPE RIS snapshot at 16:00 UTC on 2 November saw no routes for the ASN.

The number got there before the buildings. ARIN’s 1 November delegated file listed 33,137 assigned ASNs; its 2 November file listed 33,138. The new row is AS403163. Its RDAP record names the network CMU-MIAMI and identifies Carnegie Mellon University as the registrant. The registration event is timestamped 12:04 UTC on 2 November.

Carnegie Mellon’s president’s September announcement puts the Miami campus on another clock. The university says $2 billion of a donor’s gift will launch a planned 35-acre campus in Wynwood. Construction is slated for 2027. Graduate enrollment is planned for 2028, subject to regulatory approvals; undergraduates are planned for 2032. The registry has an identity for the project before the first planned construction year.

An ASN is a routing identity, not a ceremonial ribbon. Yet registration alone does not show a campus network is carrying traffic. RIPE NCC’s RIS routing-status snapshot at 16:00 UTC on 2 November reported no announced prefixes or neighbors for AS403163 among its sampled peers. That is one observation window. Carnegie Mellon’s network plan or the first observed BGP announcement would show how it intends to use the number.
