OUR TAKE Character.AI’s new call function allows users to customise the voice of artificial intelligence characters, and this personalised setting can not only meet users’ pursuit of uniqueness and exclusiveness, but also make AI closer to users’ lives and habits, achieving more natural and smooth interaction. –Zora Lin, BTW reporter AI chatbot startup Character.AI has announced the launch of a call feature that allows users to have voice conversations with their AI avatars in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

Analysis
The startup tests the calling feature ahead of its public launch on Thursday, during which more than 3 million users made more than 20 million calls. The company also notes that talking to an AI character can be used to practice language skills, conduct mock interviews, or add them to the gameplay of a role-playing game. Users simply click a button to initiate a call directly with a user-generated AI character. Character.AI says this feature is designed to make the call experience smoother and reduce latency. In early March, Character.AI launches Character Voice, which allows users to hear characters speak during one-on-one chats. The feature allows users to create their own sounds, and there are more than 1 million sounds in the app library. The boom in artificial intelligence has prompted startups to roll out new chatbot features. Earlier this week, The Information reports that Google is developing its own custom chatbot platform to compete with Meta and Character.AI.
