BYD’s Xuanji smart car system, with advanced AI, propels the global EV giant ahead. Challenges loom amid market shifts, fierce competition, and profitability squeezes in the Chinese EV industry.
BYDs strategic moves
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD introduced its AI-driven smart car system on Tuesday, aiming to outpace rivals in advanced technologies like automated parking. The Xuanji system enhances safety and comfort, perceiving changes both inside and outside the vehicle in milliseconds. The “Xuanji” architecture is structured into three tiers, each designed to fit into different brands and models. It integrates the AI Large Model, with the industry’s largest data foundation, empowering continuous adaptation.
Wang Chuanfu, BYD’s chairman, highlighted at the Dream Day event on January 16th that the system will accelerate the auto industry’s transformation. Despite surpassing Tesla as the top-selling EV brand in Q4, BYD plans a 5 billion Chinese yuan investment for the world’s first all-terrain professional test drive sites in Chinese cities.

BYD secured a conditional testing license for Level 3 autonomous driving in Shenzhen last July, a milestone in China. L3 autonomy requires human readiness to take over within seconds. However, BYD’s Shenzhen-listed shares dropped over 2% amid a broader decline in the Chinese stock market.
Challenges faced
Intensifying competition and a price war in the Chinese EV market impacted profitability for BYD, Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto. Competitors like Xpeng, Nio, Huawei, and Zeekr unveiled new EV models, entering a dynamic market landscape. Xiaomi, a consumer electronics company, also joined by revealing its EV car model.
