Summary

  • ARIN’s live RDAP object for 8.8.8.0–8.8.8.255 links to an ARIN Whois REST record with the relation alternate.
  • The registered meaning of alternate is a substitute for the present context; it does not certify an independent source, legal ownership or routing operation.

Two views, one registry authority

The ARIN RDAP response for 8.8.8.8 identifies the network range 8.8.8.0–8.8.8.255, handle NET-8-8-8-0-2, name GOGL and type DIRECT ALLOCATION. Among its links is an RDAP self reference. A separate link, marked rel="alternate", points to the ARIN Whois REST representation.

That second URL is not a second registry. It is another ARIN-operated representation of the same registration context. The distinction matters whenever an analyst treats agreement between the RDAP and Whois views as corroboration. Matching fields may show that two ARIN delivery surfaces are aligned; they do not create an independent chain of evidence.

The IANA Link Relation registry defines alternate as referring to a substitute for the current context. RFC 9083’s link model explains how RDAP objects carry web links and their relation semantics. Neither source says that an alternate representation has a different authority, verification process or evidentiary origin.

What comparison can and cannot establish

Comparing the two views remains operationally valuable. A missing field, different status, changed event timestamp or stale contact rendering can expose representation drift. The alternate link also gives investigators a registry-provided route to a legacy interface when they need to understand how a datum is displayed there.

But the comparison must keep its provenance attached. It cannot, by itself, prove legal title, transferable ownership, BGP origin, transit, reachability, routing control or traffic location. Those conclusions require evidence appropriate to the claim: contractual or corporate records for legal rights, and time-aligned routing and measurement data for network operation.

The safe reading is therefore narrow: ARIN says that this Whois URL is a substitute view associated with the RDAP object. It is evidence about representation and registration provenance, not an independent vote on the truth of every field.
