  • Humane today officially launched the AI Pin, its first screen-less wearable device designed to “replace phones.”

The AI Pin is a tiny laser projector that clips to the front of a shirt and projects call information and other data onto the hand. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, runs OpenAI‘s GPT-4 generation algorithm, and is equipped with a microphone, camera, and sensor that can be used as a virtual assistant and communication device – a gadget designed to interact with large language models rather than apps, for conversation rather than typing.

The concept of AI Pin

The AI Pin has no screen and is an “apparel based wearable” that users can attach to their clothes. AI Pin is supported by OpenAI and is equipped with a proprietary language model developed based on GPT-4. The device will also be equipped with a camera, a microphone and speakers, various sensors, and a laser projector. The AI Pin will operate as a standalone device without having to be paired with a smartphone and will be able to answer user questions, make calls, send text messages, and more.

Main features of AI Pin

The new form without screen displays the interface through laser projection: The AI Pin uses an aluminum shell, looks like a larger brooch, a watch dial, can take photos, send and receive text messages, and make phone calls, and the change in its interaction mode makes its portability much more than the current lightweight electronic devices such as mobile phones and tablets. It can be controlled by clicks, gestures and voice commands. Instead of an electronic screen, it uses laser projection to project the display into the palm of the hand.

“Natural” AI hardware: Unlike VR/AR headsets, AI pins have strong AI genes and are born as AI hardware. Humane co-founder Bethany Bongiorno calls the AI Pin the world’s first contextual computer, and the AI Pin is equipped with a ChatGPt-like AI chat assistant AI Mic, which is positioned as an AI assistant with a built-in AI large model. Previous reports mentioned that it is mainly supported by GPT-4. Long press the Pin to talk to the AI Mic, communicate in natural language and search the web like ChatGPT.

The demand for computing power is huge: From the ultimate design concept, Humane created AI Pin to make the hardware become another pair of eyes and another brain for perceiving and thinking about the world. This means that devices need to stay connected at all times, have strong computing power anytime and anywhere, and in addition to end-to-end reasoning, they also need huge cloud reasoning computing power. In this regard, Humane revealed in its Series C funding announcement that it has partnered with Microsoft and will use Microsoft’s AI cloud infrastructure.
