  • The United States is drawing up a list of advanced Chinese chipmaking factories barred from receiving key tools.
  • The U.S. Department of Commerce banned U.S. companies from shipping equipment to Chinese factories that produce advanced chips in 2022 for national security reasons.
  • Many companies say it is difficult to determine which Chinese factories produce advanced chips.

The U.S. is working on a list of advanced Chinese chip-making plants that are banned from receiving critical tools so that companies can more easily stop the flow of technology into China.

Restricted List

The Commerce Department in 2022 barred U.S. companies from shipping equipment to Chinese factories producing advanced chips, as the U.S. seeks to severely limit Beijing’s technological advances over national security concerns.

Some US companies say it is difficult to pinpoint which factories in China produce advanced chips and have long urged the Commerce Department to publish a list.

The move reflects the US government’s commitment to strengthening existing restrictions on Chinese chips by facilitating compliance for US firms.

The list could be published in the coming months, a person familiar with the matter said.

In recent years, the U.S. government has been cracking down on Chinese tech brands in the U.S.

While the Commerce Department declined to comment, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington critised the US for allegedly stretching the concept of national security.
