- Terradepthhas announced an ambitious project to map the vast, uncharted regions of the ocean floor.
- With more than 80% of the ocean remaining unexplored, this initiative aims to uncover the mysteries that lie beneath the waves.
OUR TAKE
Terradepth’s commitment to mapping the ocean floor marks a significant step forward in oceanic exploration. As we venture into the unknown,we stand to gain invaluable insights into the heart of our planet.

What happened
Wolfel,co-founder and CEO of Terradepth, was surprised during his time in the Navy to discover how little governments and commercial organisations knew about the seabed.Years later,he started a company to try to solve this problem. That company is Terradepth, and it’s working to map more of the seafloor while building a platform that makes it easier for people to access and use that data.
Terradepth’s mission is driven by the belief that understanding our oceans is crucial to the health of our planet. The company’s state-of-the-art equipment and innovative approaches will be employed to achieve this goal.
Wolfel said on a recent episode of TechCrunch’s found podcast that while this is a large problem to solve, it’s a worthy one to tackle.“We’re going to have to be vertically integrated. And by vertically integrated,I mean,we’re going to have to invest heavily on the hardware and robotic side so that we can massively scale ocean data collection capability,”he said.

Why it’s important
“The ocean floor is the last great frontier on Earth, and mapping it is essential for the future of marine science and conservation,”said Dr.Marina Williams,Chief Oceanographer at Terradepth.“Our work will not only reveal the unknown but also ensure the sustainable use of our oceans”.
The company is committed to sharing its findings with the public, fostering a greater appreciation for the ocean’s significance and inspiring the next generation of oceanographers.
Terradepth’s project will leverage autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remote operated vehicles (ROVs), and satellite imagery to collect data over vast areas with unprecedented accuracy. This mapping project is expected to have far-reaching implications for environmental policy, scientific research and our collective understanding of Earth’s largest ecosystem.
This initiative has the potential to uncover new species, geological features, and help us better understand the impact of human activity on the marine environment.By mapping the entire seabed,Terradepth will provide valuable data for conservation efforts and sustainable resource management.
