Summary
- Reddit committed to spend an aggregate US$880 million on AWS from July 2026 through June 2029, but disclosed no annual floors, usage schedule, pricing tiers or AWS-only consumption.
- H1 purchases of property and equipment were only US$2.224 million because third-party providers host the platform. The cloud commitment is therefore an operating-input contract, not owned infrastructure or capex at signing.
- Q2 revenue grew 61% and gross margin reached 91.3%. The durable test is whether user growth, product work and monetisation generate useful cloud consumption faster than hosting cost and supplier constraints reduce flexibility.
The infrastructure bill is not in the server ledger
Reddit's second quarter looked unusually efficient for a platform serving 130.3 million daily active uniques. Revenue rose 61% to US$804.9 million. Gross margin improved 50 basis points to 91.3%. Operating cash flow was US$261.9 million and Reddit-defined free cash flow was US$260.7 million.
That last conversion appears almost frictionless because Reddit subtracts purchases of property and equipment from operating cash flow, and quarterly PP&E purchases were only US$1.1 million. For the first half, they were US$2.224 million. Reddit explicitly says the measure is useful because third-party infrastructure partners host its services, so it does not incur significant capital expenditure to support revenue-generating activity.
The servers have not disappeared. The ownership boundary has changed. In June, Reddit extended its AWS agreement through 2029 and committed to aggregate spend of US$880 million between July 2026 and June 2029. The commitment is about 396 times H1 PP&E purchases, but that ratio compares a three-year operating obligation with six months of asset purchases. It is useful only as a map of accounting perimeters, not as a cost multiple.
The filing does not say that US$880 million is payable now. It is not classified as debt, current expense or physical reserved capacity. Nor does the agreement put AWS hardware on Reddit's balance sheet. It binds future access to cloud services while the resulting cost reaches the accounts as services are consumed and invoices are paid.
A low-capex free-cash-flow measure has a rent clock
The arithmetic average is approximately US$293.3 million per year, or US$24.4 million per month. Neither number is a disclosed floor. Reddit does not publish the contract's annual sequence, pricing tiers, volume mechanics, termination economics or remaining obligation under the predecessor agreement. A straight-line estimate could be materially wrong if demand, discounts or minimums vary through the term.
This boundary matters because free cash flow reacts differently to rented and owned infrastructure. Buying a server generally appears in investing cash flow and is subtracted in Reddit's free-cash-flow reconciliation when it becomes PP&E. Renting cloud services generally reaches operating cash flow through the payment cycle. Signing the full future commitment does not deduct US$880 million from free cash flow on day one.
The result is not accounting weakness. It is a different capital model. Reddit can add capacity without constructing data centres or carrying a large server asset base. At 30 June, net PP&E was only US$12.0 million, while cash, equivalents and marketable securities totalled US$2.8 billion. The platform can preserve cash and adjust workload architecture faster than an owner-builder can sell a facility.
But asset-light is not obligation-light. A non-cancellable supplier commitment converts part of future flexibility into a consumption problem. If useful workloads grow, the commitment can purchase the infrastructure supporting revenue and product development. If workload mix, architecture or demand changes, Reddit still needs to understand which spend qualifies and what it costs to move.
Hosting cost appears in more than one margin
The public accounts do not offer an AWS invoice. Cost of revenue includes payments to third parties for hosting and supporting Reddit's applications and website, alongside other delivery costs and employees. Research and development also includes hosting used for internal product work.
Q2 cost of revenue increased 53% to US$70.3 million, below the 61% increase in revenue. Reddit attributed the increase mainly to greater hosting usage for product enhancements and user growth, partly offset by lower hosting prices and efficiencies. H1 R&D expense rose 13% to US$438.5 million, with higher internal-development hosting among the causes.
Those disclosures support two conclusions and reject a third. First, cloud usage is already an operating cost tied to delivery and product work. Second, revenue grew faster than the disclosed delivery-cost line in Q2, consistent with the higher gross margin. They do not reveal how much of either cost line went to AWS, how the June addendum changed unit prices, or how much committed spend has already been consumed.
The correct receipt is therefore a three-part bridge: qualifying cloud consumption, the expense lines receiving that consumption, and the revenue or product outcome produced by it. Without the first, investors cannot test the commitment. Without the second, they cannot locate margin pressure. Without the third, a cleared minimum could still represent poor capital allocation.
Growth and commitment run on different demand signals
Reddit's revenue is mostly advertising, while advertisers generally do not make long-term commitments. Infrastructure supply is now partly governed by a multi-year commitment. That duration mismatch is manageable when engagement, ad pricing and product demand compound. It becomes harder when short-duration advertising demand weakens while supplier economics keep running.
Current evidence is constructive. Q2 DAUq grew 18%, average revenue per unique rose 36%, and revenue expanded 61%. H1 operating cash flow reached US$574.1 million. Hosting prices and efficiencies partly offset increased usage. These are not signs of an immediate burden.
They are also not proof that every future AWS dollar will be productive. New features can consume hosting before generating revenue. International users can expand faster than monetisation. AI, search, video and safety systems can raise inference, storage or development demand on different clocks. Reddit itself expects some product investments to add hosting cost before they add revenue.
