A live picture can conceal a missing protection layer. That is the commercially important qualification to AWS's September 10 introduction of A/B forensic watermarking in MediaLive. The feature supplies differently marked versions of live video so that a downstream system can construct session-specific sequences and help trace unauthorised redistribution. It does not make successful playback a test of successful attribution.

The troubleshooting guide explains why. Incorrect watermark configuration causes MediaLive to disable watermarking for that output group while the channel continues producing video. Alerts are available in the console and as CloudWatch events. Some individual renditions can also arrive without marks when their dimensions fall outside the supported range, even though the channel runs without an error. A control room that watches only whether the picture is present can therefore miss a different failure.

Buying the feature means buying a chain. Under the feature guide, MediaLive creates an A and a B version of each video rendition in the supported group and sends them to paired destinations. A watermark-aware origin or CDN chooses the appropriate segment for each viewer request. MediaLive itself neither makes that per-viewer choice nor creates the viewer-facing manifests. The attribution associated with a session depends on work beyond the encoder.

There is a supplier dependency at the other end too. Irdeto is the first available implementation, with a valid licence arranged directly with that provider and stored in AWS Secrets Manager. Embedding also requires usable timing information. Without the required embedded UTC timecode, a channel can run while its watermark sequence cannot be reliably detected downstream. A licence setting, a running encoder and a detectable final sequence are three different things to verify.

Packaging must preserve the evidence rather than merely preserve playback. The MediaPackage documentation describes how epoch-locked CMAF ingest and watermark pacing information keep bit positions aligned when segments are combined. That allows the downstream CDN to derive the correct position. It is an intermediate responsibility, not a replacement for session selection or detection.

The cost denominator deserves equal care. The pricing guide counts each A/B variant as a separate video output, doubling the number used for output-based pricing in the enabled group. Other output groups are unaffected. That does not establish a doubled total invoice, doubled viewer downloads or a precise change in CDN traffic. Licensing and downstream arrangements still require their own commercial assessment.

Nor should A/B be confused with channel redundancy. The configuration guide distinguishes watermark destination roles from the pipeline fields in standard channels. Treating the B watermark copy as merely a standby would misunderstand both the workflow and what is being paid for. The purchase is useful only if the final delivered sequence can support the tracing job for which those extra outputs were commissioned.
