IBM has unveiled its latest service, the IBM NS1 Connect Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB), which leverages DNS technology to enhance the load balancing capabilities for enterprise customers dealing with highly distributed applications and multicloud workloads. This innovative offering combines IBM’s NS1 DNS technology with real-time user data to deliver faster connectivity, improved failover, and enhanced resiliency, as stated by David Coffey, IBM’s vice president of product management and software networking.
NS1 Acquisition by IBM Enables Advanced Traffic-Steering Technology
The acquisition of DNS specialist NS1 by IBM in 2023 paved the way for integrating advanced traffic-steering technology that intelligently distributes DNS traffic across networks. NS1’s dynamic DNS services enable intelligent decision-making concerning internet request routing based on factors like availability, performance, and time-of-day, providing customers with the flexibility to establish redundant DNS servers for backup purposes, bolstering resiliency.

Real-Time User Data Enhances User Experience Quality
Real-time user data plays a pivotal role in this service, encompassing critical information such as network performance, user locations, and engagement metrics directly collected from site or application users. By utilizing NS1 Connect GSLB, customers can optimize server and application loads based on end-user device latency and other real-time data collected by the system, aiming to elevate user experience quality by enabling the setup of multiple routing pathways to eliminate single points of failure, Coffey emphasized.
Unlike conventional GSLB solutions that route all traffic through a single ingestion point, thus heightening risks and diminishing application resilience, the IBM NS1 Connect GSLB equips customers with the ability to establish a global traffic management policy that automates and customizes distributed resource traffic management, offering a powerful and highly customizable tool for enterprises.
IBM’s Innovative Approach Enhances User Experience Optimization
According to Shamus McGillicuddy, research director at Enterprise Management Associates, IBM’s innovative approach to tying global server load balancing with end-user experience telemetry distinguishes it from traditional DNS-based GSLB solutions, enhancing user experience optimization by routing users to application instances based on real-time performance and availability data rather than just geolocation and server/application utilization.
