Summary
- HealthOmics adds resource visibility while workflows run, with CloudWatch ingestion charges.
- Missing observations must remain distinct from measured inactivity when teams decide how to respond.
A blank patch on a resource chart can look reassuring. It can also be the least informative part of the chart. The distinction matters when a team has minutes, rather than hours, to decide whether a scientific-computing workload needs attention.
AWS announced 14 HealthOmics run metrics on September 11; CloudWatch ingestion charges apply. Their business value lies in making resource decisions better informed. Counting new measures, however, is not the same as establishing when they can inform a decision.
Three different observation windows
The run-metrics guide describes markedly different timing:
| Case | Documented window |
|---|---|
| Task under 30 seconds | Metrics may be absent |
| Dynamic run-storage usage | Possible delay over 30 minutes |
| Shared scratch usage | 20-minute sampling |
Those are not three descriptions of one universal refresh rate. A dashboard that puts the series beside one another needs to preserve the distinction. Otherwise the reader may compare observations from different moments as though they describe the same operating state.
Consider an alert intended to help a running task. Its useful window is the interval in which someone can still make a worthwhile decision—not simply the interval in which the graph eventually fills. Information arriving later can remain valuable for the next run. That is a different use, and it deserves a different promise.
Empty is not an allocation recommendation
An absent observation cannot tell an operator, on its own, that a task used no resources or had ample headroom. It is a reason to investigate the evidence boundary, not a basis for immediately reducing the allocation. This is an interpretation rule, not a report of a HealthOmics failure.
AWS's task lifecycle provides separate status information and gives a retried service-error task a new identity. Teams can keep that lifecycle evidence alongside the resource series. A gap during one attempt should not be casually joined to a measurement from another as if nothing changed.
For a buyer, the practical question is which decisions the new information can support: intervention during a long-running stage, investigation after completion, or sizing of a later comparable run. These should not be sold internally as one benefit. A polished chart cannot establish a root cause, automatically repair a workflow or validate a scientific result.
No customer failure avoidance, savings figure or detection time has been measured for this report. The announcement expands an observation surface; its value still depends on a response process that understands what it can and cannot see.
