Summary
- EOSC put 13 new research nodes into production beside its existing EU Node on 8 October; its symposium later counted 124 services across 14 live nodes.
- The node coordinators said signing the framework agreement was unnecessary for initial production, while a legal commitment is essential for long-term operation.
A scientist hunting a dataset has no interest in which committee owns the doorbell. She wants to log in, find the service and know whom to call when the handoff between nodes jams. EOSC has now made that a production question. The European Commission calls the 13 new hubs the federation’s first expansion beyond the EU Node. The EOSC Association counts 14 live nodes altogether, with 14 more working toward readiness. The number is a map of current capacity, not a promise that every planned node is ready.
The live group spans national nodes, scientific communities and infrastructure operators. Czechia and Finland sit alongside CERN, a digital twin of the ocean, EGI and GÉANT. A catalogue that can locate a service across those boundaries is useful; an authentication decision, support ticket or incident can cross the same boundaries with less ceremony. The symposium’s operating sessions covered authentication, catalogues, help desks, monitoring and service management. That is where the federation becomes a service rather than a photograph of a launch.
The coordinators’ production notes describe a ten-point entry checklist and baseline cybersecurity work. They also state that nodes could reach the October launch without signing the framework agreement. The legally binding instrument was still described as in progress at the 20 October symposium. The published record offers no final signed agreement or federation-wide figures for cross-node incident resolution. Those two records would show how the operating promise is being governed.
