• The 2025 DDoS Mitigation Leak Made BGP Role Boundaries an Accountability Test

  On 1 April 2025, a routing mistake associated with distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) mitigation provider Voxility, identified on the Internet by autonomous system number AS3223, briefly sent traffic for thousands of destination networks through an unintended path involving transit provider Lumen, AS3356, and Bucharest. Border Gateway Protocol, or BGP, is the system independent networks use to exchange reachability information. It can select a technically valid origin while still carrying a route across the wrong customer, peer or provider boundary. Kentik reported more than 30,000 leaked routes and evidence of both misdirected and dropped traffic. The incident therefore was not simply a configuration error at one company. It was an accountability test for every operator that exported, accepted, propagated or relied on the path. The public record shows the wrong running state. A defensible closeout would also need the relationship records, filters, alerts and repair evidence that explain why it happened and why the same class of leak should now fail closed.
