SpaceX has now put an address and an opening capital estimate on its TeraFab ambition: Grimes County, Texas, and approximately $16.8bn for an initial phase funded by SpaceX and Tesla. That is a material narrowing of a project that was already visible in prospectus and county records. It is not evidence that the money has been spent, that a 100m-square-foot plant exists, or that the companies can already make one terawatt of compute a year. The strategic change is subtler. SpaceX and Tesla want to replace dependence on outside foundry allocation with control of logic, memory, packaging and testing—thereby taking on the execution risks that foundries currently absorb.

SpaceX’s second-quarter filing shows an AI infrastructure programme expanding faster than its current revenue base. The strategic question is no longer whether it can finance capacity, but whether concentrated customers and partly terminable contracts can absorb that capacity long enough to cover depreciation and produce operating returns.

SpaceX says its next Starship flight will attempt something the programme has never done: carry Starlink V3 satellites to operational orbit. The tentative end-of-August mission would connect the rocket directly to the economics of the company’s broadband network. Yet the announcement is still several gates short of capacity. Flight authorization, liftoff, orbital insertion, deployment, satellite checkout and live service remain separate results.

Two U.S. Space Force task orders give SpaceX a $1.6 billion campaign of 18 Falcon 9 launches from Vandenberg through the end of 2027. The award does not buy completed constellations. It buys access to a launch system, range infrastructure and operating cadence that can convert delivered satellites into missions—and it reveals why a multi-provider contract can still depend on one provider’s near-term capacity.
