Southern Phone Company Ltd

A mobile number can look like a simple contact detail, but in everyday life it often works as a key. Banks send one-time codes to it. Friends, employers and service providers use it to identify the person they expect to reach. Moving that number to a new carrier therefore changes more than a billing relationship: it transfers operational control of an important communications resource. Australia's communications regulator found that scammers manipulated Southern Phone's systems to bypass required identity checks on 168 occasions over eight months between July 2024 and February 2025. Twenty consumers reported combined losses of at least A$393,000. The case shows why a written porting rule is only the start. The live path must be tested, monitored and proved effective continuously.
