Robert Elz

In March 1986, the .au country-code top-level domain was delegated to one person: Robert Elz, then a network programmer at the University of Melbourne. By the end of 2001, the public record showed the domain's authority in the hands of .au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA), a company with a constitution, a board, and what ICANN announced as its first formal agreement of this kind. The fifteen years between are documented not by memoirs but by a chain of dated instruments — a sub-delegation, a government endorsement carrying conditions, a formal redelegation request, two IANA reports, and a sponsorship agreement.
