Internet exchanges are places where networks connect directly, a practice called peering; transit is paid upstream connectivity. Route servers help operators share reachability information efficiently, while a looking glass lets engineers inspect that routing view without administrator access to another network's equipment. A jointly authored 2020 LINX engineering record credits Senior Network Engineer Jan Kayser and two colleagues with replacing ageing route-server and collector observation tools. The work matters beyond one organisation because weak visibility can make reachability problems harder to diagnose even when traffic still flows. The team evaluated maintainability, memory demand, and support for BGP, the protocol networks use to exchange route information, and RPKI, a system for checking whether a network may announce an address block. Their testing moved the deployment from a virtual machine to physical hardware and consolidated most collectors onto infrastructure LINX already operated.
