Public registry records, live routing observations and Cox's own operating disclosures show why a broadband connection depends on a chain of controls rather than one reassuring number.

On 1 May 2025, a routing observer that deliberately retained RPKI Invalid announcements saw Cox Communications' AS22773 appear as the origin of 4,651 additional IPv4 routes. APNIC's analysis found that 4,644 of those routes would have been Invalid to a validating BGP speaker, while seven were not covered by a valid Route Origin Authorization. The contrast is unusually useful: it shows what accurate authorization data and independently chosen rejection policy can contain, but it does not prove universal rejection, validate the full path, identify Cox's internal trigger, or transfer the originating network's prevention duty to its neighbors.

Charter completed its acquisition of Cox with approximately the same 33.6 million exchangeable common units promised in 2025. What changed was their implied value: Charter called them US$11.9 billion at signing and approximately US$5 billion at closing, making the seller's exposure to the buyer's market price the deal's clearest economic fact.
