AT&T is leading and will own a 53-sector MIMO distributed-antenna system at Mississippi State University's Davis Wade Stadium, using Airspan's MobileAccess 6000 platform across mid-band spectrum. The design is intended for more than 60,000 seats and multiple operators, but no other carrier, commissioning result or crowded-event performance measure has been disclosed.

For five hours on March 8, 2017, a mismatch between AT&T's provisioning record and its live emergency-call network prevented thousands of customers from reaching 911 directly. The Federal Communications Commission traced the event from an incorrect IP whitelist through Session Border Controllers, a shared reset response, an undersized manual fallback and a slow cross-team diagnosis. The lesson is narrower and more useful than saying that redundancy failed: records, change classification, path isolation, alarm delivery, fallback capacity and public-safety notification all have to be proved against the network that actually ran.

A different 5G symbol on an emergency worker’s handset would say little about who controls the connection. FirstNet’s consequential change is deeper in the network: subscribers have begun moving to a nationwide standalone 5G core dedicated to public safety and physically separate from AT&T’s commercial core. That core decides how sessions are authenticated, policies applied and traffic handled; multiple geographically distributed sites are intended to keep those functions available when one location is impaired. The launch is an architectural milestone, not a completed performance result. AT&T has not disclosed migration coverage, site locations, failover tests, measured latency or upload gains, and compatible devices and plans are still required.

On 8 March 2017, an inaccurate whitelist—an approved list of network addresses a system will accept—moved from AT&T's provisioning inventory into live service and blocked routing information needed for Voice over LTE (VoLTE), which carries voice calls over a mobile operator's fourth-generation data network. Approximately 12,600 unique callers could not reach traditional direct 911 during an outage lasting about five hours and one minute. Shared reset behavior removed an otherwise working alternate route, defeating logical diversity, the ability of separate paths to keep working independently during failure. A staffed relay center built for exceptional calls could not carry national demand.
