The deployment, developed with vendor partner Ericsson, places WindTre among a small group of operators now moving beyond basic 5G coverage to deliver differentiated services enabled by a full 5G-native core network.

Unlike earlier 5G implementations that relied on 4G infrastructure beneath the radio access layer, WindTre’s 5G SA network runs independently, delivering the low latency, high reliability and quality of service (QoS) needed for enterprise-grade use cases. The network slicing service effectively partitions the public 5G network into multiple “virtual private networks”, each tailored to specific performance requirements. These can support business-critical applications ranging from augmented-reality maintenance and secure Push-to-Talk communications to dependable digital payment systems and clinical data exchange in healthcare settings.

WindTre’s chief technology officer Carlo Melis described the standalone network as a “customised platform” that adapts to the needs of digital services and strategic sectors such as industry, transportation, healthcare and media. The company is emphasising accessibility for small and mid-sized enterprises, offering slicing solutions that deliver enterprise-level performance without the cost and complexity of traditional mobile private networks.

A case study already highlights the potential of network slicing: WindTre deployed a dedicated slice for HD video production at a large sporting event, where mobile cameras on the public 5G SA network streamed live content reliably despite the presence of tens of thousands of spectators.
