- TikTok has failed to continue its contract with Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) and will shut down music content on the platform.
- The removal of UMPG music has some impact on TikTok.
TikTok’s deal with Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) ended in a stalemate, and it has begun removing UMPG content from its video app after failing to reach a new agreement.

After TikTok and UMPG failed to reach a new agreement, TikTok began shutting down videos containing songs written by UMPG-signed songwriters on its platform after the agreement expired on January 31. Presumably, it will have removed all UMPG content by the end of February.
The music company reached a deal with TikTok in February 2021 to allow users of the video app to add clips from the UMG catalog to their videos.
Some changes
UMG, the world’s largest music company, has said TikTok only accounts for about 1% of its total revenue. With the end of this partnership, it seems to have little impact on UMPG, but it may be challenging for TikTok since popular songs come from UMG, and UMPG accounts for about 20 to 30 percent.
A source said TikTok has reached out to Universal and is negotiating a new deal, but Universal did not immediately respond.
