- Tesla’s Gigafactory near Berlin plans expansion but faces opposition from local residents concerned about water resources and forest impact.
- Despite a high voter turnout of 70%, the majority voted against Tesla’s expansion, indicating potential hurdles for the project.
- This underscores Tesla’s need to address community concerns and foster better relations to gain local support.
On February 21st, news emerged that Tesla‘s Gigafactory near Berlin, located in the Grünheide district of Brandenburg state, plans to expand but faces opposition from local residents. The Gigafactory currently produces only Model Y electric cars, but Tesla has always intended for significant expansion.
However, since its inception, the project has faced opposition from some residents and environmental organisations, primarily concerned about the impact of expansion on water resources and forest clearance. Recently, the local government held a vote to gauge support for the expansion plan among Grünheide residents.

3,499 residents voted against the expansion
The voter turnout was as high as 70%, but the results did not favour Tesla. According to German media outlet Spiegel, 3,499 residents voted against the expansion, while only 1,882 supported it. Although this vote does not have legally binding force, it may pose obstacles to the expansion plan as Tesla needs to acquire land from the local government to proceed with the project.
The vote mainly targeted the proposed additional logistics area for Tesla, covering 170 hectares, with over 100 hectares being forested and requiring clearance. Tesla’s expansion in Germany has faced various forms of resistance, but the company has previously adjusted plans based on concerns such as water usage.
The outcome of this vote suggests that Tesla may need to exert more effort to build better relations with Grünheide residents and garner their support.
