Summary
- Guidewire’s July quarter produced stronger operating income but lower net income. The reversal arose below the operating line, not from a fall in quarterly revenue.
- An unrealised currency loss is part of the explanation; a swing from a tax benefit to a provision is another. Neither should be described as a matching cash payment.
- The company now excludes unrealised currency movements from adjusted earnings and has recast earlier periods. Last year’s originally published adjusted EPS is therefore not the consistent comparator for this year’s figure.
A stronger business can report a smaller bottom line
Guidewire’s September 3 results give investors two apparently incompatible signals. For the quarter ended July 31, the insurance-software supplier increased revenue by 15%. GAAP operating income rose from US$29.6m to US$62.3m. Net income, however, declined from US$52.0m to US$31.4m. The business earned more before financing, other income and tax, but less after those intervening items. That is an accounting reconciliation to investigate, not a choice between believing the sales figures and believing the profit figures. Quarterly results
The market question is what part of the improvement can be carried forward. Operating income is useful evidence about the revenue and cost structure of the business. It is not a promise that the same improvement will reach shareholders’ net earnings. Conversely, a lower bottom line does not establish that demand for insurance software weakened. Both shortcuts would discard information that the income statement supplies.
This quarter is especially instructive because the company has also changed how it presents adjusted earnings. A currency loss affects GAAP profit, is excluded from the selected non-GAAP measure, and sits against a prior-year comparison that has itself been recalculated. Before discussing growth, readers need to know which version of the comparison they are using.
Where the operating gain went
The income statement permits a precise bridge. In US dollar millions, operating income improved by 32.721. Lower interest income absorbed 3.371 of that improvement; higher interest expense absorbed another 0.062. Other income and expense deteriorated by 24.971, moving from a net gain to a net expense. Pretax income consequently increased by just 4.318.
Tax then changed the direction of the final comparison. The current quarter carried a US$13.908m provision, against a US$10.966m benefit a year earlier. That US$24.874m adverse comparison exceeded the modest pretax improvement, leaving net income US$20.556m lower. These are editorial subtractions from the reported statement, not additional charges announced by the company. Statement of operations
The displayed current-quarter component amounts add to US$1,000 less than the reported pretax subtotal. The comparison here retains that reported subtotal rather than inventing an extra income item.
The bridge disciplines the headline. Calling the net-income decline solely a tax story would overlook the large movement in other income and expense before tax. Calling it solely a currency story would overlook the tax comparison after it. Adding the currency loss again to the deterioration in other expense would double-count a component already inside that line.
Nor does a tax provision identify cash paid during the quarter. The release establishes the income-statement comparison; it does not, by that comparison alone, establish a particular jurisdictional cause or a permanent future tax rate. An explanation that invents either would be more confident than the evidence.
The foreign-exchange loss is identified, but not every exposure
Guidewire identifies an approximately US$24.0m quarterly foreign-currency loss, against a US$2.8m gain a year earlier. Its reconciliation specifies an unrealised loss of US$23.975m and an earlier unrealised gain of US$2.776m. Those amounts are not identical to the entire other-income-and-expense line. The distinction leaves room for the other items actually recorded there rather than pretending that every below-operating movement is foreign exchange. Currency discussion and reconciliation
The latest available quarterly filing supplies a mechanism, with an important date attached. At April 30, Guidewire described monetary balances in currencies other than the recording entity’s functional currency: trade and unbilled receivables, trade payables, and intercompany balances. Remeasuring such balances can change reported earnings even when the underlying software work has not changed. The same filing said local revenue and costs provide a substantial natural offset, while warning that long customer relationships make future offsets uncertain. April quarterly filing, currency risk
That description is context, not a July exposure map. It does not identify the currency, affiliate or customer responsible for the fourth-quarter loss. It also prevents an easy but mistaken equivalence: collecting revenue and paying employees locally can reduce operating exposure without necessarily matching every receivable or intercompany balance at the reporting date.
“Unrealised” matters, but does not mean “economically irrelevant”. The loss is not evidence of a US$24m cash payment at that moment. Neither does the label guarantee that an exposure will reverse favourably before settlement. The future result depends on balances, timing and exchange rates that the quarterly headline does not enumerate.
Last year’s adjusted number has two publication histories
There is a second comparison problem. When Guidewire announced the July 2025 quarter, it reported non-GAAP net income of US$72.1m and diluted EPS of US$0.84. Those are valid records of what was published then. They are not the figures used for that quarter in the September 2026 release. Original 2025 results
The current release presents the earlier quarter at US$70.3m and US$0.81, alongside this quarter’s US$83.1m and US$0.99. Guidewire says it began excluding unrealised foreign-exchange gains and losses in the third quarter of fiscal 2026 and recast earlier non-GAAP schedules. The exclusion operates in both directions: it removes a prior gain as well as a current loss. It is not a restatement of GAAP earnings. Current methodology and comparison
An analyst who takes this year’s US$0.99 from the new release and last year’s US$0.84 from an old spreadsheet is joining two methodologies. The numerical difference may look small; the analytical error is not. A consistent time series requires a consistent definition. Related tax effects also matter, so the difference between the two historical adjusted-net-income figures should not be attributed mechanically to the gross currency adjustment alone.
The recast comparison offers real counterevidence to an indiscriminately bearish reading: adjusted net income increased, and operating income improved without needing the new below-operating currency exclusion. But non-GAAP earnings still answer a selected question. They do not cancel monetary balances, settle receivables or transfer currency exposure to somebody else.
Evidence of improvement, not immunity
Operating cash generation provides another check. The quarter generated roughly US$283.9m, versus US$244.8m a year earlier. Full-year GAAP net income also increased, despite the fourth-quarter decline. A claim that the latest quarter demonstrates annual profit deterioration or a matching cash drain would therefore misstate the period and the measure. Cash-flow and annual statements
That stronger evidence does not collapse all the measures into one. Cash collections, accruals, operating expenses, currency remeasurement and tax can run on different schedules. The useful conclusion is narrower and more durable: Guidewire’s operating progress is visible, while the conversion of that progress into net income remains exposed to factors that an adjusted earnings presentation deliberately sets aside.
