- Helsinki-headquartered Basemark has raised €22M to bring its augmented reality (AR) “toolkit” to carmakers around the world.
- Basemark’s software, Rocksolid AR, enables carmakers to develop their own AR applications for Heads-up Display (HUD).
- The AR-HUD is intended to improve situational awareness and overall safety while driving.
Basemark enables carmakers to develop their own AR applications for Heads-up Display (HUD), has successfully raised €22M in series B funding.
Fusing AR with HUD
Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR-HUD) technology is a combination of AR technology and heads-up display.
HUD (Head Up Display) is an optical projection technology that is transitioning from fighter applications to vehicle uses. HUD puts vital information such as speed and altitude directly in front of pilots, allowing them to maintain their “head up” without having to shift their sight to various gauges.
By applying AR to HUD, AR-HUD takes things a step further to create a far superior experience. Unlike traditional HUD, AR-HUD relays crucial information to drivers by projecting real-time contextual assistance, alerts, and AR content onto windscreens. Thus, AR-HUD assists drivers in maintaining their concentration on the road, so contributing to improved worldwide road safety.
Many cars on the road currently employ this technology, but it is becoming increasingly advanced each year. It’s designed to increase situational awareness and overall driving safety.
Basemark’s Rocksolid AR
Basemark’s software, called Rocksolid AR, is an AI-based computer vision technology that enables carmakers to create their own AR applications for Heads-up Display (HUD).
Different from most firms in the field, which create their own AR software to market to manufacturers, Rocksolid AR is a toolkit that assists carmakers in developing their own AR technologies, adapting them to their individual requirements.
Rocksolid AR features advanced localisation and motion tracking to precisely anchor AR content in the driver’s field of view, assuring accuracy even in the presence of motion or vibration. This improves the dependability of AR applications in vehicle contexts.
Furthermore, Rocksolid AR helps reduce latency and eliminates motion sickness by making sure that AR content feels connected with the real environment. It also automatically avoids blocking safety-critical information in the driver’s environment for a safe and immersive AR experience.
The founder and CEO of Basemark, Tero Sarkkinen says “AR development is very slow, expensive, and tedious to learn, requiring expertise in AI, computer vision, graphics, and embedded systems — that’s why we developed Rocksolid AR.”
