In a mixed-version OSPFv3 area, a router can receive a well-formed Extended LSA, store it and relay it within the encoded flooding scope while understanding none of its optional meaning. RFC 8362 makes that behaviour deliberate. Acee Lindem, one of its five co-authors, helps expose a useful boundary for infrastructure evidence: custody of routing state is not proof of semantic support.

A valid signature can authenticate an old packet perfectly. That is the danger. If an OSPF router restarts and forgets which authenticated packets it has already accepted, a recording from yesterday can arrive wearing a correct digest and present itself as new. RFC 7474 makes rebooting part of the security identity: the router must carry a persistent boot count into the next session, advance a packet counter inside that epoch and change keys when the memory of past epochs is lost.
