• When you turn on the browser’s privacy mode, each time is a fresh start. As a result, all the benefits of browser personalization will be lost. Once incognito mode is used, the browser clears the browsing history and any cookies created during the session.
  • The point of the incognito mode mode is not to mask the fact that you have visited a website, but to mask the fact that you have visited the website from your device.
  • Some search engines, such as DuckDuckGo, are more privacy-conscious and promise to never collect personal information or track people who type queries on their sites. Even with all these options, it’s unlikely to be truly invisible online.

The settlement, announced in federal court on Monday, aims to ensure more privacy for Chrome incognito mode users when they surf the web. Google Chrome’s “incognito” incognito mode mode has been in use for nearly a decade, and a legal solution to the way it works has brought it back into the spotlight. Although Google has not paid consumers, the lawyers who filed the lawsuit in June 2020 believe that the value of personal information protected by the settlement is estimated at $4.75 billion to $7.8 billion.

What does incognito mode do?

When the browser’s privacy mode is turned on, it clears the browsing history and any cookies created during the session, and the browser does not remember where you have been and does not store any information. For example, make sure searches for sensitive topics like healthcare don’t show up in your browsing history. In addition, you can add protection when surfing on a public computer or logging into your account.

Disadvantages of incognito mode

The point of the incognito mode mode is not to mask the fact that a website has been visited, but to mask the fact that the device has visited the website. Incognito mode generally does not prevent visited websites from seeing their location by IP address, nor does it prevent Internet service providers from recording activity. The Mozilla Foundation says that as long as your IP address is visible, your identity and activities are fully exposed to search engines and third parties.

If a federal judge approves the settlement after a court hearing on July 30, Google will also be required to set incognito mode so that users can automatically block “cookies” that let third parties track them for the next five years. Any files downloaded or bookmarks created during a private session are not deleted at the end of the session, which means that they are still vulnerable to computer viruses, malware and keyloggers.

Other incognito mode options

Virtual private networks can interfere with IP addresses, making websites harder to track. But using a VPN also brings additional security concerns. Some search engines, such as DuckDuckGo, are more privacy-conscious and promise not to collect personal information. Tor, for example, is designed to make it harder for third-party trackers and advertisers to track you. Even with all these options, it’s unlikely to be invisible online.
