What happened

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest 10.1 billion reais (US$1.8 billion) to expand its datacentre infrastructure in Brazil over the next 10 years. This investment will enhance both existing sites and new ones. The announcement was made by company executives at the Planalto presidential palace in Brasília on Wednesday, in an event attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

During the event, the federal development bank BNDES introduced a 2 billion-real financing line for datacentres as part of a broader industrial policy announced by the government.

On the same day, Scala Data Centers revealed a US$50 billion datacentre complex project for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which will include 17 buildings.

AWS’s investment will focus on expanding its cloud and connectivity infrastructure in São Paulo state, aiming to address the growing demand for cloud services and generative artificial intelligence.
