What happened: Polar launches sustainable AI-ready facility in Norway

Norwegian data centre provider Polar has chosen Vertiv as the main infrastructure partner for its first AI-ready modular facility. The site, based in Norway, is expected to go live in the second half of 2025. It marks a key milestone in Polar’s plan to build sustainable, high-density data centres across Europe. The facility will run entirely on hydroelectric energy. It will also use liquid cooling to support up to 120kW per rack, making it suitable for demanding AI and HPC workloads. Vertiv will design, deliver, install, and commission a 12 MW prefabricated modular (PFM) solution. This system can scale up to 50 MW as needed. It features the Vertiv™ EXL S1, a UPS optimised for variable loads, and the Vertiv™ Liebert® AFC chiller, which uses a low-GWP refrigerant to cut emissions and save energy.

Why it’s important

AI and high-performance computing are becoming more power-intensive. As a result, sustainable infrastructure is now more urgent than ever. Polar’s new facility sets a strong example. It combines renewable energy with efficient cooling and power technologies. This helps reduce environmental impact while meeting modern computing demands.

Moreover, the modular design enables fast deployment and easy expansion. Vertiv’s system includes N+1 redundancy for both power and cooling, which improves reliability. According to Vertiv’s Viktor Petik, the project proves that high-density data centres can be built quickly and responsibly. Polar CEO Andy Hayes added that the solution allows them to scale with demand, without compromising their climate goals.
