    • Character.AI’s new call feature allows users to talk to AI avatars over the phone, and users can customise the AI voice.
    • This incident will intensify competition for market share with rivals such as OpenAl and Google.

    OUR TAKE
Character.AI’s new call function allows users to customise the voice of artificial intelligence characters, and this personalised setting can not only meet users’ pursuit of uniqueness and exclusiveness, but also make AI closer to users’ lives and habits, achieving more natural and smooth interaction.

    What happened

AI chatbot startup Character.AI has announced the launch of a call feature that allows users to have voice conversations with their AI avatars in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

The startup tests the calling feature ahead of its public launch on Thursday, during which more than 3 million users made more than 20 million calls. The company also notes that talking to an AI character can be used to practice language skills, conduct mock interviews, or add them to the gameplay of a role-playing game.

Users simply click a button to initiate a call directly with a user-generated AI character. Character.AI says this feature is designed to make the call experience smoother and reduce latency. In early March, Character.AI launches Character Voice, which allows users to hear characters speak during one-on-one chats. The feature allows users to create their own sounds, and there are more than 1 million sounds in the app library.

The boom in artificial intelligence has prompted startups to roll out new chatbot features. Earlier this week, The Information reports that Google is developing its own custom chatbot platform to compete with Meta and Character.AI.

    Why it’s important

The launch of this new function by Character.AI shows a new breakthrough in speech synthesis technology in the field of artificial intelligence. Through advanced algorithms and deep learning technology, AI can imitate a variety of voices and intonations, and even simulate the voice of a specific person, providing users with a more colorful interactive experience. This technological breakthrough not only promotes the development of the field of artificial intelligence, but also brings new opportunities and challenges to other industries.

With the continuous progress of AI technology and the continuous expansion of application scenarios, AI has gradually penetrated into all aspects of our lives. Character.AI launches a new call function, so that AI can play a role in more scenarios, such as online education, smart home, medical health and other fields. Users can set the AI sound according to the needs of different scenarios, so as to better meet the actual needs of users.

As a start-up company in the field of artificial intelligence, Character.AI’s new call function not only shows the company’s innovation ability and technical level, but also injects new vitality into the development of the entire artificial intelligence industry. This event will attract more enterprises and investors to pay attention to the field of artificial intelligence, promote technological innovation and application in this field, and thus accelerate the development of the artificial intelligence industry.
