  • The cyberattack on the Polish news agency PAP caused significant delays in news dissemination and affected the agency’s ability to provide real-time updates to its subscribers.
  • In response to the suspected Russian cyberattack, the Polish government has increased cybersecurity measures and is working with the National Cyber Security Center to investigate the breach and bolster defenses.
  • The incident has drawn attention from Poland’s allies in the European Union and NATO, highlighting the need for a unified response to the increasing threat of state-sponsored cyberattacks.

The Polish news agency, PAP (Polska Agencja Prasowa), is suspected to have been the target of a Russian cyberattack, according to Poland’s Minister of Digital Affairs, Janusz Cieszyński.

Operational disruption

Minister Cieszyński disclosed that the cyberattack occurred in the early hours of the morning, significantly disrupting the agency’s operations and compromising its digital infrastructure. The attack caused delays in news dissemination and affected the agency’s ability to provide real-time updates to its subscribers. Preliminary investigations indicate that the cyberattack on PAP has the characteristics of operations typically conducted by Russian state-sponsored hackers. The Ministry of Digital Affairs is collaborating with cybersecurity experts and international partners to mitigate the impact and prevent future incidents.

The attack on PAP, one of Poland’s primary sources of news, has raised serious concerns about the security of critical information infrastructure in the country. As a key player in the Polish media landscape, PAP supplies news to numerous local and international outlets. The disruption caused by the cyberattack has had a ripple effect on news dissemination across Poland.

Wojciech Surmacz, the CEO of PAP, highlighted the broader implications of the attack, noting that it represents not just an assault on a single news agency, but on the free flow of information within the country. PAP teams are working around the clock to restore full functionality and ensure that subscribers continue to receive accurate and timely news.

Government response

In response to the cyberattack, the Polish government has heightened its cybersecurity measures and urged other media organisations to remain vigilant. The Ministry of Digital Affairs is coordinating with the National Cyber Security Center to investigate the breach and bolster the defenses of other potential targets. The government is taking this incident very seriously and is implementing immediate steps to enhance cybersecurity protocols. This concerted effort aims to remain vigilant against threats that seek to destabilise information systems and undermine public trust.

International attention

The suspected Russian cyberattack on PAP has garnered international attention, particularly from Poland’s allies in the European Union and NATO. Calls for a unified response to the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks allegedly originating from Russia have intensified. An EU spokesperson emphasised the collective responsibility of cybersecurity, expressing solidarity with Poland and urging all member states to strengthen their defenses against such malicious activities.

The Polish government, along with PAP, is committed to restoring normalcy and preventing future cyber incidents. The Ministry of Digital Affairs has announced plans to invest in advanced cybersecurity technologies and conduct comprehensive training for personnel across critical sectors. These efforts to secure the nation’s digital infrastructure will be intensified, and the attack has strengthened the resolve to protect information systems against any adversary.
