What happened: Finland launches Europe’s first 50-Qubit superconducting quantum computer

Finland’s leading research institute, VTT Technical Research Centre, in collaboration with computer company IQM Quantum Computers, has developed and launched Europe’s first 50-qubit superconducting quantum computer. The quantum computer is located at VTT’s Micronova facility in Espoo, southern Finland, and is accessible to researchers and businesses through the VTT QX quantum computing service.

The 50-qubit system serves as a baseline for IQM’s Radiance 54-qubit quantum computer. The project, initiated in November 2020 with a budget of 20.7 million euros (21.85 million U.S. dollars) from the Finnish government, was completed in three phases: a 5-qubit system in 2021, a 20-qubit system in 2023, and the final 50-qubit upgrade in 2025.

    Why it’s important

The launch of Europe’s first 50-qubit quantum computer marks a significant milestone in quantum computing development. It positions Finland as a leader in quantum technology and provides a powerful tool for advancing research in areas such as material modeling, optimization problems, and artificial intelligence.

The availability of this quantum computer through the VTT QX service enables researchers and businesses to explore new algorithms and applications, fostering innovation across industries. This achievement also highlights the importance of government funding and collaboration between research institutions and private companies in driving technological breakthroughs.
