What happened

OpenAI recently announced the launch of SearchGPT, an innovative prototype AI-powered search engine that accesses Internet information and delivers it to users in real time. It is designed to provide summarised search results and allow users to ask follow-up questions to get contextually relevant answers. OpenAI says it will integrate the best features of the search tool into its existing chatbot, ChatGPT. SearchGPT is currently tested with a small group of users and publishers. In addition, OpenAI plans to provide publishers with tools that will allow them to manage how their content is presented in SearchGPT’s search results.

Notably, the launch of SearchGPT has raised concerns about content copyright and data usage. For example, emerging AI search services such as Perplexity have faced legal challenges from publishers, suggesting that how to balance technological innovation with copyright protection is a crucial issue to be addressed in the AI search space. OpenAI’s initiative not only demonstrates the potential of AI search technologically, but also sparks a discussion about how to protect the rights of content creators while advancing technological development.

As AI technology continues to advance, the emergence of SearchGPT foreshadows the future direction of search technology and may drive the entire industry to transition to more intelligent and personalised services.
