    • OpenAI CEO congrats Donald Trump in winning the president election.
    • Sam Altman posted chat.com domain on X, the website redirect straightly to ChatGPT.

    What happened

Following the US election result came out on Nov 7th. Sam Altman posted on X social media platform congrats president Trump on his winning. He then posted a chat.com domain without any words in a post follow his congratulations thread. The domain chat.com is originially owned by Dharmesh Shah, co-founder of HubSpot, who brought it last year for 15.5 million.

There’s no detailed information on how much Sam Altman paid on the deal from Dharmesh Shah’s hand, but he does confirmed that the amount is more than what he had paid.

    Sam’s post on X, Nov 7th, 2024.

    Why it’s important

Sam Altman’s purchase of the chat.com domain, especially after the U.S. election, signals a few potential strategic moves. First, securing a highly generic and memorable domain like “chat.com” implies Altman sees enduring value in AI-driven chat services. This move is likely meant to enhance the accessibility and brand reach of ChatGPT or OpenAI’s related products, giving them an immediately recognizable URL for direct user access.

The timing post-election is also significant, as it avoids the distractions of election news cycles, creating a clear opening for launching or rebranding AI tools under this new domain. Altman likely chose this period to attract attention from a tech-savvy audience when there’s high interest in AI’s role in information access, potentially positioning chat.com as a go-to resource in this new era.
