    What happened

The Vatican, in partnership with Microsoft, has launched a digital replica of St. Peter’s Basilica, enhanced by AI to enrich the visitor experience. With two AI exhibitions, the project was made possible by Iconem, a company that digitizes heritage sites. The 3D model was created by scanning the basilica using drones, cameras, and lasers, capturing over 400,000 photos in just four weeks. Pope Francis, who reviewed the project, emphasized the importance of ethical AI, stressing it should “help us to grow” and be responsibly governed. The replicas and exhibitions provide virtual access to St. Peter’s treasures, offering an immersive experience of Renaissance artwork and architecture. Unveiled ahead of the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee celebrations, this initiative marks a significant moment in both AI and religious history.

    Why it is important

The Vatican’s use of AI to digitize St. Peter’s Basilica marks a significant step in blending technology with cultural heritage. By offering new ways to preserve and share historical sites, AI makes them accessible to anyone, anywhere. This project not only highlights AI’s role in preserving art but also in providing virtual tours and enhancing the visitor experience. Furthermore, similar initiatives, such as virtual museums, demonstrate how technology can democratize access to heritage sites. In addition, Pope Francis underscores the importance of ethical AI use and responsible tech governance. As a result, this development showcases how AI can both preserve cultural history and offer valuable educational opportunities. Moreover, the project is closely tied to the 2025 Jubilee celebrations, further spotlighting technological advancements.
