    News: Google’s CEO faces employee questions about layoffs

    In a recent all-hands meeting, Google CEO Sundar Pichai faced tough questions from employees, reflecting a growing divide and concerns over recent layoffs and communication transparency. The TGIF meeting, once an open forum, now sees pre-submitted and voted-on questions, highlighting a shift in the company’s dynamics.

    Questions addressed the perceived rift between leadership and employees, expressing worries about layoffs and the lack of internal visibility regarding these announcements. Employees voiced discontent with the scripted nature of the meetings, marking a departure from Google’s earlier open and engaging TGIF sessions.

    Pichai acknowledged room for improvement

    Pichai defended the recent layoffs, acknowledging room for improvement in the handling of the situation. He framed the cuts as a strategy to simplify the organisation and drive efficiency, aiming to address unnecessary layers and bureaucracy within the company.

    Despite concerns about the rapid integration of generative AI, Pichai compared it to past transformative shifts, emphasising its importance in reimagining products. He assured that the transition, including the replacement of Google Assistant with the Bard chat bot, would be transparent and opt-in.
