  • Nexfibre, a joint venture behind the network, invests £4.5 billion to deliver fibre to 5 million homes across the UK by 2026, reaching one million premises ready for service.

What happened: Virgin Media launches fibre in Stoke

Virgin Media has successfully connected 13,000 homes in Stoke to its gigabit broadband network, introducing full-fibre broadband with speeds of up to 2Gbps. This upgrade promises to transform internet access in the area, offering speeds 25 times faster than the local average of 77Mbps, as reported by Ofcom’s 2023 Connected Nations Report.

Julie Agnew, Managing Director of Fixed Network Expansion at Virgin Media O2, emphasised the benefits of this service, stating, “These ultrareliable full fibre to the home broadband connections provide total peace of mind.” The network expansion is part of a larger initiative by Nexfibre, a joint venture investing £4.5 billion to deliver fibre to 5 million homes across the UK by 2026.

This investment not only enhances connectivity but also supports local economies, enabling small businesses to thrive in a digital landscape. Overall, this initiative reflects a positive step towards improving broadband access and fostering economic growth in underserved areas.

Why this is important

The expansion of Virgin Media’s gigabit broadband network in Stoke is a significant development in the UK’s digital landscape. With 13,000 homes now connected to full-fibre broadband, this move not only enhances individual connectivity but also supports local businesses and the economy.

As highlighted by Julie Agnew, “These ultrareliable full fibre to the home broadband connections provide total peace of mind,” underscoring the reliability essential for both remote working and digital entrepreneurship. In a market where many rural and semi-urban areas still struggle with inadequate internet access, initiatives like Nexfibre’s £4.5 billion investment are crucial. This investment aims to reach 5 million homes by 2026, promoting digital equality.

The impact of improved broadband access extends beyond just faster internet; it enables small businesses to compete more effectively, facilitates online education, and enhances community engagement. Moreover, this development aligns with the UK government’s commitment to achieving nationwide gigabit-capable broadband by 2025. The ongoing investment in fibre infrastructure is positive, fostering innovation and economic growth, while ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital revolution.
