Patrick Mbogo joins LINX to lead Africa growth strategy

  • LINX names Patrick Mbogo as Business Development Executive for Africa.
  • New appointment comes amid IXPs growth in Kenya and upcoming launch in Ghana.

What happened: LINX taps industry veteran to lead African growth

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has appointed Patrick Mbogo as its new Business Development Executive for Africa. The move is part of LINX’s broader strategy to strengthen its footprint across the continent and accelerate the roll-out of regional Internet Exchange Points (IXPs). The appointment coincides with the company’s planned launch of LINX Accra in Ghana and follows earlier expansions in Kenya’s Nairobi and Mombasa.

Mbogo brings over 15 years of industry experience, primarily focused on the African telecoms market. At Liquid Intelligent Technologies, he led major infrastructure projects involving submarine cable systems and cross-border connectivity. His expertise in launching operations in new markets gives LINX a key advantage as it deepens its reach across East and West Africa.

In his role, Mbogo will lead the business development efforts for LINX’s regional IXPs, serving as the main point of contact for new network partners. He will focus on building relationships with telecom operators, data centre providers, and content delivery networks to promote local peering and enhance digital interconnectivity. His deep understanding of local regulatory environments and market dynamics will also be essential in navigating expansion challenges.

Why it is important

Africa continues to experience rapid digital growth, yet many countries still rely heavily on international transit for internet traffic. LINX’s strategy of building local, carrier-neutral IXPs helps address this issue by keeping data local. This significantly reduces latency, improves network resilience, and lowers costs for internet service providers and users alike.

By investing in infrastructure that fosters local internet ecosystems, LINX is enabling faster access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and financial platforms. This is especially crucial in under-connected regions where digital inclusion is vital for socio-economic development. The presence of IXPs can also help attract global tech firms to establish a stronger local presence, further fuelling innovation and investment.

Mbogo’s appointment comes at a pivotal time as LINX prepares to launch its West African hub in Ghana. This move reinforces its commitment to long-term growth in the region. With partnerships already in place with major data centre operators like iColo, Africa Data Centres, IXAfrica, and PAIX, LINX is positioning itself as a central player in the continent’s digital future.
