OpenAI is an American Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory consisting of the non-profit organisation OpenAI Inc. and its for-profit subsidiary OpenAI LP. OpenAI conducts AI research to promote and develop friendly artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity as a whole.

OpenAI started as a non-profit in 2015 and transitioned to a for-profit company in 2019. 2020 has so far released products such as ChatGPT, Sora, and DALL-E, and maintains a strong partnership with Microsoft, which owns the exclusive licence to use GPT.

Fun fact about Elon Musk and OpenAI: the Tesla CEO and co-founder of OpenAI started xAI last year as a challenger of OpenAI and released Grok, its first AI macro-model product.

He said in a lawsuit filed in San Francisco Superior Court that OpenAI and its current CEO, Sam Altman, had gone against the non-profit, open-source vision of OpenAI when it was originally founded and instead pursued commercial profit.
