    • Sir Dave Lewis to channel Moroccan energy to the UK.
    • Subsea cable project targets UK sustainability and energy needs.

    What happened

Sir Dave Lewis, the former boss of Tesco, is spearheading an ambitious project to build the world’s longest subsea power cable, stretching 4,000 km from Morocco to Great Britain. This initiative, backed by Xlinks, will harness renewable energy from vast wind and solar farms in Morocco’s Tantan province, potentially supplying up to 8% of Great Britain’s electricity needs. The project not only promises a significant step towards cleaner energy but also positions the UK to meet its climate goals by 2030.

    Why it is important

This subsea cable project is a monumental step in global energy cooperation. It exemplifies how countries can leverage their natural resources to contribute to the global shift towards renewable energy. For the UK, this means a more reliable and diverse energy supply, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing energy security. For Morocco, it signifies an economic boost through large-scale infrastructure development and the creation of nearly 10,000 jobs, with 2,000 expected to be permanent. The project also aligns with the UK’s commitment to achieving a net-zero emissions target by 2050, supporting the rapid decarbonization of its economy. This initiative underscores the potential for international partnerships in renewable energy to combat climate change and drive sustainable development.
