Amazon, Google, and Meta support tripling nuclear power by 2050

    • Tech giants Amazon, Google, and Meta have signed a pledge to support tripling global nuclear capacity by 2050.
    • The companies join over 20 countries and numerous financial institutions in backing the initiative.

What happened: Tech companies back nuclear energy expansion

Amazon, Google, and Meta have joined a pledge to support efforts to triple nuclear energy worldwide by 2050. This initiative was first adopted in December 2023 by more than 20 countries, including the U.S., at the U.N. Climate Change Conference. Financial institutions like Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley also backed the pledge last year.

The pledge is nonbinding but highlights growing support for expanding nuclear power among leading industries, finance, and governments. The tech sector is turning to nuclear power after concluding that renewables alone won’t provide enough reliable power for their energy needs, especially as demand for electricity increases due to AI-driven data centers.

    Why it’s important

The commitment by Amazon, Google, and Meta to support tripling nuclear power underscores the growing recognition of nuclear energy’s role in future energy security. This initiative aligns with global efforts to enhance energy security and meet climate change goals. The tech companies’ support signals a shift towards more sustainable and reliable energy sources that can meet the increasing demands of a digital economy.
