What happened: ICANN advances internet stability and security through global collaboration

In 2024, ICANN’s Technical Engagement (TE) team marked significant progress in its mission to promote the stability, security, and accessibility of the internet. The team organised over 200 events worldwide, focusing primarily on DNS best practices, security, and technical training.

Key highlights included a three-day event in Iceland, aimed at building local knowledge on DNS operations, and a workshop in Rwanda, held in partnership with the United States Telecommunication Training Institute (USTTI). The latter was ICANN’s first collaborative event during an ICANN meeting, drawing participation from over 11 African countries.

The TE team also held a workshop in Indonesia as part of the APAC DNS Forum and made notable contributions in India, engaging in DNSSEC and cybersecurity discussions. Additionally, ICANN’s KINDNS initiative gained traction with over 2,000 operators worldwide using its self-assessment tools to improve DNS security.

    Why it’s important

The progress made by ICANN’s Technical Engagement team in 2024 underscores the ongoing commitment to securing and stabilising the global internet infrastructure. The initiatives led by the team directly contributed to strengthening DNS operations, enhancing cybersecurity practices, and building local expertise across various regions.

In particular, ICANN’s efforts to expand participation in traditionally underserved regions like Africa and Southeast Asia help promote a more inclusive and resilient internet ecosystem. Through initiatives like the KINDNS programme and collaborations with local stakeholders, ICANN has reinforced its role in fostering global partnerships and advancing internet governance.

These efforts are critical in ensuring that DNS security remains robust as the internet continues to evolve, addressing emerging challenges and vulnerabilities.
