The fact

Veolia and Amazon have partnered to deploy reclaimed water systems for data centre cooling in Mississippi. Veolia will treat effluent from nearby wastewater treatment plants and other sources into water that meets industrial cooling standards. The site, expected to become operational in 2027, will be Amazon's first data centre in Mississippi to use reclaimed water for cooling. Once fully operational, it is projected to reuse more than 83 million gallons of potable water annually. Amazon Web Services will support the system with AI, machine learning and generative AI tools for optimisation and predictive maintenance.

The Assessment

The deal reflects water availability becoming a more material constraint on data centre growth, alongside power and planning approvals. For Amazon, investing in reclaimed water can ease pressure on local resources, support its 2030 water-positive target and reduce friction with regulators and communities as campus expansion continues.

What to Watch

Whether Amazon replicates the Mississippi model across other campuses, and whether hyperscale rivals adopt reclaimed water partnerships as standard practice for new AI-driven data centre builds.
