EthERNet develops advanced educational technology in Ethiopia

    • The Ethiopian Education and Research Network (EthERNet) has significantly advanced educational technology in Ethiopia through the launch of its Ethiopian Federation Identity System (EFIS), which enhances security and facilitates single sign-on convenience for users.
    • EthERNet’s expansion plans, including the integration of additional Identity and Service Providers, underscore its commitment to fostering collaboration and resource sharing among educational institutions, supported by comprehensive training programs and capacity building initiatives.
    • With a robust network infrastructure and a strong organisational framework, EthERNet is poised to continue its transformative impact on the Ethiopian educational landscape, ensuring that institutions can effectively participate in national, regional, and global research and education communities.

    EthERNet’s EFIS revolutionises education

EthERNet has paved the way for enhanced security and collaboration in education through the implementation of its EFIS. This system provides a centralised authentication process that significantly improves security by minimising the risk of unauthorised access to educational resources. It also offers the convenience of single sign-on, allowing users to access multiple online resources and services across member institutions with a single set of credentials, thereby streamlining the user experience and reducing the administrative burden of managing multiple usernames and passwords.

Furthermore, EFIS’s integration into eduGAIN expands the range of services available to identity providers within the federation, facilitating broader collaboration and resource sharing among educational institutions. EthERNet’s commitment to continuous learning and collaboration is evident in its plans for expansion, which include onboarding more identity and service providers, and offering comprehensive training programs to ensure seamless integration and active participation of new members.

By focusing on these initiatives, EthERNet not only enhances the security and accessibility of educational resources but also fosters a collaborative environment that encourages institutions to share knowledge and work together towards common educational and research goals. This approach underscores the network’s dedication to innovation and excellence in serving the academic community, and its role in building a highly interconnected and advanced network of Ethiopian research and education institutions.

By building and delivering interconnected and advanced networks, EthERNet enables universities and research institutions to actively participate in national, regional, and global research and education communities, thereby fostering an environment of innovation and excellence in education.
