What happened: APNIC engages at the 2024 Internet Conference

APNIC participated in the 2024 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit, which took place from 19 to 22 November 2024 in Wuzhen, China. The conference featured an opening ceremony, a main forum, and 24 specialised sub-forums that explored various topics, including open-source ecosystem development, data governance, and AI innovation and governance. The overarching theme was ‘Embracing a People-Centred and AI-for-Good Digital Future – Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace’. During the event, Pablo Hinojosa presented at the Next Generation Internet Forum, where he emphasised that internet resiliency is as much a human challenge as a technical one. He also participated in the International Norms in Cyberspace Forum, delivering a presentation on positive protective measures for the public core, highlighting their significance in fostering global internet stability and trust.

Why it’s important

APNIC’s participation in the 2024 World Internet Conference is significant as it highlights the ongoing dialogue surrounding internet governance and resilience in an increasingly digital world. With the overarching theme of fostering a people-centred and AI-for-good digital future, this event underscores the urgent need for collaborative approaches to address challenges related to data privacy, cybersecurity, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence. Pablo Hinojosa’s emphasis on internet resiliency as a human challenge reflects a broader industry trend where stakeholders recognise that technology alone cannot solve complex issues. Small companies and startups often lack the resources to implement robust cybersecurity measures, making them vulnerable to attacks that can have wide-reaching implications. By focusing on community-driven solutions, industry leaders can empower these smaller entities, fostering innovation and resilience. The discussions around protective measures for the public core resonate with recent trends in global internet policy, which advocate for greater transparency and trust. This approach is crucial as it impacts everyone, from individual users to large corporations, ensuring a safer and more equitable digital landscape. Overall, this collaborative spirit is essential in shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for the internet.
