  • Verizon’s 5G plans exceed subscriber estimates.
  • The company’s strategy includes bundling 5G with streaming services.

What happened

Verizon reported a higher-than-expected increase in wireless subscribers in the third quarter, with the addition of 239,000 net monthly bill-paying wireless phone subscribers. This figure surpassed expectations of 218,100 additions. The U.S. telecom giant attributed this growth to its promotional offers and flexible plans that bundle 5G services with streaming platforms like Netflix, which have been instrumental in attracting new customers. Verizon’s myPlan, a customizable offering that includes streaming perks such as Disney+, Hulu, and Max for an additional cost, has been particularly successful in retaining its competitive edge in the U.S. telecom market.

Why it is important

The success of Verizon’s 5G plans is significant as it indicates a positive market response to flexible and value-added services in the telecom industry. With the U.S. wireless market nearing saturation, Verizon’s ability to expand its high-speed internet business and tap into increasing data usage by customers is crucial. The company’s fixed wireless service, which sends signals to a device in a home or business over airwaves, added 363,000 customers, hitting a total of nearly 4.2 million, and meeting its goal of 4 to 5 million subscribers more than a year ahead of schedule. This not only showcases the effectiveness of Verizon’s strategy in growing its subscriber base but also underscores the importance of innovative service offerings in a competitive market. The growth in subscribers also highlights the increasing adoption of 5G technology, which is set to revolutionize digital connectivity and media, aligning with Verizon’s commitment to technological advancements and customer satisfaction.
